What You Need to Know to Pass The ITIL Exam

By Anthony Biggs

Understanding what ITIL is and why you need to become certified is crucial before going into the detail and the tips for passing the exam. By passing your ITIL exam you will become part of one of the most widely used IT Management Frameworks in the world.

There are hundreds of thousands of companies the world over that have successfully implemented ITIL as their IT Management Framework of choice, to ensure that their businesses run efficiently and effectively from an IT perspective. ITIL provides a structured approach to the management and provisioning of IT resources and has numerous benefits, from Cost optimization, improvement in IT Services, quicker time to market services to an increase in customer satisfaction.

The Foundation level exam for ITIL v3, which rewards those who have studied with a 95% pass rate, is made up of 40 questions which are all multiple choice. To successfully pass this exam a student must get 65% of the questions correct, in this case 26 correct from the possible 40. The Foundation exam is made of the five ITIL core books which is why it is so difficult as questions can come from any of these 5 publications.

So how do you pass the version 3 certification exam? My advice would be to ensure that you know which processes belongs to which topic, know which key activities make up each process. Know who is responsible to various activities in terms of process ownership. Also make sure you know the acronyms, terminologies to use in the processes, as well as the key phrases that may indicate which process the question is about. Understand the interrelationship between the processes, and know the benefits that can be realized from each process.

The processes themselves are what is examined more often with only a few of the questions relating to people and the service desk in general. Ensure that you do not spend too much time on one question and rather come back to it at the end of the exam if you are unsure. Write your answers down on a separate sheet of paper and then fill in the official sheet once you have completed the paper. Remember that more often than not your first answer was indeed the correct one

Make sure that there are no distractions in the examination room especially from other learners, rather try and ignore other people who are writing with you. Mark the answers you know are correct first and then back track on the answers you were unsure of. Don't worry if you don't know the answers as you go through the paper, they will come back into your head. Following these tips will ensure you pass the the exam.
