Compared to a point to point link, the device requires headers which include vital information like the source address and destination address. The headers are connected to each data payload. The devices communicate updates within the network and hence the routing tables are maintained.

The device also offers security for the information transferred between the computers and the internet. It is preferable to connecting the computer to a modem which may pose security risks. Linking computers in a large network without the use of router or a switch is difficult. The device is used to link the network of the company and the outside world through the network. This provides an environment that is easy to secure.

The reliability of the operations of the firm can be improved. Considering that there are several networks connected by the routing device it is important that the faults in one network do not in any way affect the operations of the other networks.
