Computer Programming as a Career

By Chad Heyne

Some would say one of the most popular jobs of today is Software Engineering. When students finish school, there is usually no shortage of available positions, even in a tight economy. For those that embrace technological change and enjoy it, computer programming is a terrific field. There are several facts in this article for you if you are thinking about becoming a software developer.

When you create software, you must write source code that a computer can understand. This is done in a programming language and is then converted into computer language. The way the programming is done is directly related to the type of language chosen. Object-oriented programming languages are among the most popular for new graduates to work in.

Software developers can either work on maintenance of existing code or create entirely new projects for their employer. All projects are designed and created to solve a specific problem or perform a specific task. This is done by the computer executing the sets of instructions in order until the program is finished.

Computer programmers usually work for managers that decide which projects they will contribute to. The developer must implement the code and then verify that it does exactly what it is meant to do. Sometimes, depending on how important the program is, the will also be a formal validation of the code. If it does not, the programmer must figure out why and take care of the problem.

Usually the wages of a software developer will very greatly based on the type of project and who it is being developed for. All things being equal, computer programmers make very good salaries. Typically a software engineer will make anywhere between $55,000 to $85,000 per year, with management making a good deal more. Those willing to travel significantly can make much more money than those who are not.
