Hosted Telephony for Small Businesses

By Catherine McCulloch

When running a small business, it can be easy to go over budget with communication costs and unexpected travel expenses. However small businesses can help downsize their expenditures with the use of network solutions like business hosted telephony. We've rounded up some reasons why you might want to try some of these new technologies out and how they can not only save you money, but make your business strategies more reliable while increasing team productivity.

Traditional telephone systems require several cables, a host of telephones and consequential numbers, and staff must constantly be on hand to answer any calls. This results in multiple costs and limiting the work potential of employees. Business telephone systems work on an IP (internet protocol) network, rather than analogue system, meaning voice messages can be transmitted over an internet connection.

Furthermore, whilst traditional telephone systems are operated onsite, business telephone systems can be operated in an offsite location, providing greater network management for small businesses and less expenditure on IT professionals and resources.

While upgrading communication systems, another thing worth acknowledging is the network management. Several providers are often monitoring the reliability and efficiency of the business telephony systems and updating them, saving IT professionals both time and money. These people can also help small businesses increase their work output by improving their means of communication within the team and throughout all sectors in general.

In terms of space and geographical location, a business telephone system also provides small businesses with a more practical and reliable solution to network management and space. Since IP networks transmit VoIP data packets over fibre optic wires, this takes up less space than the traditional cabling system of analogue telephones, and as mentioned beforehand the IT infrastructure of a small business can be transferred for monitoring to an off-site location. This network is also more geographically resilient than traditional telephone systems because of the way information is transferred, meaning small businesses will not have to suffer loss of communication due to nearby construction works or power outage.
