Teaming Up For Challenging Space Battles

By Rosina U. Stamm

Many space battles are normally used in science fiction themed video games and comprise some of the most thrilling yet challenging moments in those games. Moving through a game requires that you do many things; you may have to collect specific items, solve elaborate puzzles, and fight enemies who stand in the way of your character. Not every battle in your game will send your character to the limits of their items and abilities, but battles with boss enemies or at the end of extensive missions will get tough. Group centric battles featured in massively multiplayer online role playing games, or MMORPG's, are especially fun and challenging.

There are many clear differences between one on one space battles and team based battles that require each player to work to support their group. All you have to do when fighting an enemy on your own is use your character's attacks and items properly. Some games will sometimes add a computer controlled character to your party, but in most cases these are very limited battles and the other character has limited abilities.

If you were to use the same approach you take in single player games to the space battles found in MMORPG's, however, you would certainly get frustrated quickly. Some MMORPG's have enemies so hard that they still present a challenge even when 40 players team up together and take them on. Since every member of the group has specific abilities that give them unique advantages, the goal of a group battle is for each player to maximize their abilities for the overall benefit of the group.

In an effort to facilitate communication between members of your group, your game should include a basic chat system that can be accessed quickly and easily while playing. You can also expect to have a good visual guide that displays the status of each of your teammates during battle so that you can quickly determine if they need assistance if your strategy needs to be changed for the good of the group.

Coming to know your own character's abilities will make you a valuable teammate when working in a group to fight especially difficult space battles. Do not forget to be a good communicator within your group and to exchange single player techniques for a team based approach to sci-fi gaming.
