Domain Registration: The Naked Truth

By Olga Bisi

In this age of the internet, many businesses are going live on the world wide web, and more and more people are realizing just how much potential for income there is in cyberspace. If you are looking to establish an online presence for your business, setting up a website for it is necessary. But in order to get a place for your website on the internet, you first need to register domain name.

Having a domain name is important because it primarily serves as the identity of your website and this is what users will type on the address bar of internet browsers to check it out. Domain names have a wide variety of extensions such as .com, .net, .info, and .org. It is important that you have your domain carefully figured out and must be meaningful or relevant to the theme of your website.

In choosing a domain name, you can either use keywords that are relevant to your niche or one that describes your brand name. For example, if you're involved in selling mobile phones, then it should be something like mobilephones.com. Well known brand names such as Starbucks would have their domain name as starbucks.com. Whichever you choose, make sure you avoid trademarked or copyrighted names.

Another critical step to register domain name is to find a reputable domain registrar. Domain registrars are entities authorized to do business with domain names. With so many companies to choose from, it can be sometimes confusing which one to choose. A good rule of thumb is that you should check if the company is accredited by the ICANN (Internet Committee for Assigned Names and Numbers).

Just before you proceed to register domain name with a potential domain registrar, it is important that you get a clear understanding of their terms and conditions. You must be sure that all of what's written would not affect your website or business in any negative way. You should only deal with registrars that have prompt notification system when your domain registration is nearing its expiration date.

There are a good number of domain registrars out there that are more than capable of providing you with quality services, but of course, they charge some fees for it. At $10 per year, you should be able to get your website existing on the internet. Be careful about those that offer something less than $5 or even free - they are not always as good as they seem to be.

It may be possible that your chosen domain name has already been previously registered - if so, don't be discouraged. Just try to use your creativity to come up with unique set of relevant keywords. Also, make it a point that you register domain name under the .com extension because it will lend your site a good level of authority. In the registration process, you will be asked to provide some personal information.

When you register domain name with a particular company, it is recommended that you host your website a separate company. Hosting is important because it is where the actual contents of your site are located. Experts recommend having separate accounts as a way to spread out your risk just in case something goes wrong with either your domain registration or hosting provider.
