The Working Principle Of A DMX Merger

By Melody Lyons

A DMX merger is an electronic device that merges two or more input signals into one output signal. The merging console can be merged with a computer controller. The traditional lighting consoles are usually the ones that require to be operated from a computer. Modern ones are automated and can work on their own.

The computer console allows someone to override some of the channels available in the console. This way you can easily automate your own lighting system. You are able to control the brightness of the spots from your computer and even set automated functions that enable automatic switch over.

There are various modes in which mergers can be executed. The first one is the Highest Takes Priority normally abbreviated as HTP. Two universes are merged into one universe using either 2 lighting boards or 2 DMX Mergers. This mode comes in handy when controlling 2 different devices that have generating devices on the same universe.

The second mode of operation is called append. The transmission follows a sequential order where appending of the second input takes place only after the first one. The output is also displayed in that order. With such a mode then it is possible to manipulate mergers that have different signal generators but are located on the same universe.

The third transmission mode is the back up. Input one is continuously transmitted only if it is the valid signal required for transmission and the other one ignored. When the first signal fails then the second picks up the transmission automatically in order to maintain continuity.

Different manufacturers of the devices make designs that are easy to mount on racks. The competition is usually in terms of price and the only thing to do would be looking for a good one that comes at a fair price. Always check that the DMX merger you plan to buy can do whatever you need it for especially for online shoppers.
