Hacking How Big A Problem Is It?

By Daniel Turbin

Being a small enterprize owner myself, I have spent quite a lot of time talking with fellow home entrepreneurs. What I have discovered during those conversations is that most have no real plan when talking of network, data, or website security.

Home business owners sometimes have to wear a large number of hats, and are usually harried. Pulled in twelve contrary directions at once, and sadly , this leaves very little time to think strategically. Because of this, what thought is given to this kind of thing is usually best specified as an after-thought.

Oh sure, plenty will pay at least some attention. I don't know of anyone who doesn't have at least a freeware version of an anti-virus software running, and windows comes equipped with a firewall, so that provides at least a little protection. Most off the shelf security programs offer at least a little customizability, and a great many vendors have password gates built into the services they provide, so without doing much of anything beyond following the trail of common sense, it's possible to assemble at least a rudimentary IT security shield.

Sadly , nearly a quarter of the people I talked to didn't have anything formal in effect. More than a third failed to even do regular data backups, and almost none had any kind of formalized process or procedures in place when it came to a recovery plan, in the event of a security breech or catastrophic data loss.

Given that a hacker succeeds in breeching a firm's defenses three times a minute, somewhere on the planet these people's companies seem to me to be a lot like ticking bombs. It's not truly an issue of "if," but a matter of when.

Eventually, their number will come up, in what's possibly the worst kind of lottery you can win, and when it does, their business will suffer. It might not collapse, however it could. Data loss and the loss of the trust of your client base ( 2 common aftereffects of a successful hacking attack ), can lead to real, determined money impacts that it might take ages to bounce back from.

Don't allow that to happen to you. Shield your data. Protect your business. If you do not have the experience to do it by yourself get help from a professional independent security expert!
