What You Need to Know about Portable Hard Drives

By Slade Spire

External portable hard drives are an electronic device that people use for backing up their files from their computers. They are usually very small, around the size of a deck of cards, which makes them very portable.

They are about the overall size of a television remote control store lots of data, the most capacities are anywhere from 500GB up to 2TB of storage. To get an idea of what that is, that is over 200,000 audio files, over 1,000 hrs of vids, or almost 150,000 photos!

Choosing the best drive comes down to what you are going to be using it for. Most people use it to backup their personal files. But there are definitely other uses. Since the majority of people use them as a backup device, manufacturers usually include backup software with the drives. This makes backing up your files simple. They are also popular with laptop users, since drive space can be in short supply with many laptops.

You can use portable drives a number of different ways. Sometimes it is difficult to send a large file to another computer, so in those cases you can just put the file on the drive and copy it over on to another computer. It makes exchanging large files such as videos and music easy. Another convenient use for a portable drive is to expand the storage space on your DVR. Although not all DVR's allow you to do this, many new ones have the ability to use an external drive to expand the amount of television you can record on them.

Portable hard drives are really neat devices. As we have discussed they are just so useful, and are available in different shapes and designs. You can even find some drives that are built for maximum durability, which is very useful when you are transporting them around, throwing them in a bag. They have special enclosures that allow them to not get damaged in the event they get wet or dropped.

They don't require a lot of setup, and are just pretty much plug and play. Plug them into your desktop or laptop and it will just show up as an extra hard drive on your computer. External USB hard drives have become an essential peripheral for the computer use.
