Measures You Can Take To Prevent Data Loss

By Landon Cullenesian

It can be very frustrating to lose data on your computer by accident even more so, if those are vital to your work, business, or life in general. Case in point, a business plan you've been working on for quite some time. Unintended loss of data can be a result of software glitches, data corruption, as well as equipment and power failure. Loss of data can be extremely expensive, and the cost will be from moving forward without the data, making the data again, and for businesses, informing consumers about the loss of computer data. To prevent data loss, here are some steps you can adhere to.

Keep backups

Keeping at least one copy of your original data on another disk media is still the best strategy to prevent loss of computer data. If the data is crucial to operations or simply of great importance to you, it is advisable to store backups at an off-site location to protect these from fire or natural disasters. Although creating backups can be a chore, specifically with bigger files, but this is an excellent means of circumventing disastrous data losses. Make drive partitions and do not encrypt your hard drive totally By partitioning your hard drive, you'll have a much better possibility of retrieving documents or files should any of the partition become corrupted. In the event of a crash, retrieving data will be difficult, if not impossible, if you encrypted the entire drive. If you really need to encrypt for reasons of privacy, protect individual files rather than the entire drive.

Practice good habits when using the computer

Case in point, if you don't mean to use your computer for a long time , say several days, remember to turn it off as not doing so makes your system susceptible to damage and power surges. Also, make sure to keep your antivirus software regularly updated so that your computer is adequately shielded against viruses that can remove or alter data in your computer causing it to stop responding. Also, do not share network access to just any individual as this can result in data theft and alteration.

Protect against sudden surges in incoming voltage

Power problems are the major cause of data loss, 15 times more common than losses due to malware. If your data is essential for your work or business, it would be advantageous to invest in an uninterruptible power supply or UPS unit with automatic voltage regulator to protect your computer against power outages and power surges. The spare battery in the UPS provides you with ample time to save your documents and shut down the computer properly to avoid loss of data and damage to components during power failures. The AVR will give your computer consistent power by regulating the incoming voltage and preventing sudden increments in voltage which can be harmful to components.
