How Space Game Designs Differ

By Magdalen P. Oga

There are many different game developing companies that have made space game RPG's and MMORPG's, each of which have their own distinct styles of gameplay. Even though technology has expanded in considerable ways since the days of dice RPG's like Dungeons and Dragons, you will still notice many of the same elements in modern role playing games. Space games and other RPG's, though, have recently experienced a considerable change in platform; many are now played on the Internet. Ever since the advent of MMORPG's, or massively multiplayer online role playing games, there have been a large number of changes in the way players think of their favorite games. What are some of the major differences between RPG's for console gaming systems and MMORPG's that are played online?

The core elements of any RPG space game, such as leveling up, gaining items as loot from defeated enemies, and customizing your character, will hold true in both RPG's and MMORPG's. But the majority of one-player, console RPG's hold to a much more linear story line that does not allow for a lot of personal adaptation by players. You cannot make any changes to the plot of the game since the dialogue and events are already programmed into the game and cannot be altered.

This is very different, however, if you are playing a space game prepared as an MMORPG that allows you to interact with hundreds of other players. Developers are consistently making changes to the layout of the game and teaming up with other players also gives you a chance to explore areas you could not if you were alone. These games really feel like you are playing the role of your character because, instead of teaming up with predictable computer characters, you are working together with real people. Although online games do have a general plot line to them, this is much less rigid than in traditional console games and gives you room to make your own decisions for your character.

Very few classic RPG games allow for multiplayer gaming, but MMORPG's are specifically crafted to force you to interact with other players. The social part of playing together with lots of other MMORPG gamers is very exciting.

There are many different space game options for you to take into consideration, including RPG's and MMORPG's. By choosing a fun game that grants the features that you love, you are sure to enjoy many hours of exciting gameplay.
