Mobile Workers and Safe Technology

By Allyson Westcot

Experts predict that most workers will be mobile by the end of the next decade, and that up to 1 billion folks will work remotely in the near future. As the technology keeps improving, there'll be rather more options for mobile employees than there are at present. Whether it's trekking thru a rainforest for research or checking a patient's medical records in a speeding ambulance, durable laptops can complete the job.

Petrol and Natural Gas

Many workers are mobile. Someone who inspects oil derricks, for example, needs rugged technology. An ultra-rugged tablet would be excellent for this sort of work. When there might be liquids or gasses present in a no-spark area, a completely sealed rugged laptop or tablet PC is a total must. This could permit employees the power to communicate without cellular phones, because these telephones can spark and become a danger in certain situations.

Healthcare

Rugged technology is mandatory for hospitals, ORs and other clinical settings. The gear must be sterilized and sealed so it can't harbour bacteria that might make patients sick. A computer with a touch screen is perfect for fast-paced work in ERs and ambulances, too. Mobile clinical employees who go from place to place checking on patients can keep their records up-to-date with rugged technology, as well.

Army and Law Enforcement

Peace officers use rugged laptops in their autos to do everything from running license plates to writing reports. They can get recent info on fugitives, emergencies, crimes-in-progress and arrest warrants. Other technology lets them monitor traffic speed, film around their vehicles and keep communities safer. Army units use rugged technology for obvious reasonsâ€"regular computers couldn't stand up to the abuse that rugged technology handles with no problems.

Emergency Crews

Whether teams need to rush to a fire or groups need to organise a response to a flood, earthquake or other natural catastrophe, rugged technology keeps communication open and information flowing. It's vital that PCs don't fail during these emergency situations. With sturdy computers, the rate of failure is so little that emergency groups can depend on the technology.
