How to identify the best small printers for your needs?

By Aj Jensen

Imagine you're in the car on your way to meet a client when you realize you forgot some very important paperwork. You pull over the car, and send your mobile printer the documents from your smart phone. The next thing you know you're at the meeting, documents in hand, and you close the deal seamlessly.

The uses for a portable, travel or mobile printer are limitless. You can print out travel documentation while abroad or even tickets to a concert after you're already on the road. Although more expensive, these small printers offer many conveniences that make them well worth every penny.

Portable printers have a smaller footprint but they have all the same capabilities as any other printer of larger size. Many of these printers are WiFi/Bluetooth capable, can operate using a battery, and are much smaller and lighter weight.

There are many great small printers on the market today but some are lacking in quality and features. When evaluating a new printer make sure you check the speed, or how many pages it can print per minute (check both black&white and color speeds). For some people the number of pages the printer can hold may also be important. Other important features to consider include the print resolution, wireless/Bluetooth capabilities, and whether it can use a battery or not. Finally, you should be aware of the differences between ink jet printers and thermal printers, but that will be covered later.

If connecting to your smart phone or laptop is important, be sure the printer is WiFi or Bluetooth capable. Generally, you have to pay $50 or more for the additional hardware to enable this feature, so be sure to budget this in when choosing between different printers.

Small printers are made with Ink Jet and Thermal technology. Thermal printers are smaller (think of your grocery receipt) and only print in black and white. They are very reliable and are genuinely portable. However, Ink Jet printers have faster printing speeds, higher resolution, and more choices for wireless connectivity.

To wrap it all up, small printers are fully functional printers with the added benefits of portability, ease of travel, battery power, and wireless connectivity.
