Does Exactly What It Claims - 10 Inch Netbook Critique

By Benjamin Davis

I have been typing on every netbook I've come across for at least a year, and so far this keyboard has been the best one. Something about the way it's laid out just makes it seem more expansive.

Toshiba gives it to Amazon in a little box, and the laptop itself is just in eggshell packaging. What's worse is that Amazon puts it in a box and DID NOT surround it with packaging material. I would have probably given it 4 stars, except it's missing a feature from the Amazon description. The NB505-N508 does not support "sleep-and-charge."

The touchpad has faults. The edges are not well-defined, and in low light, you may find yourself off the edge of the pad without noticing it, except for the obvious lack of response. It's very portable, easy to grip, has a decent webcam/microphone, and pretty good battery life. One thing I suggest doing is NOT upgrading to anything higher than Windows 7 Starter unless you upgrade to 2GB of RAM.

I also love having a webcam this will make it so much easier to communicate with my family and friends at home when I leave for college in ten short days. Thanks for reading my review and good luck in your laptop search. Having said that, so far I am pleased with the netbook. I primarily use a 13" MacBook Pro and I purchased this netbook because I needed a computer to run Windows, and I didn't want to install Windows on my Mac.

I loaded up Kindle software on here and had that, MS Office (Word and Excel) and Chrome running at the same time, switching between all three with no problems. This was all with 1GB of memory.

This is my first netbook (and first Toshiba) but traveling with a 17" laptop was just too much trouble. After reading the reviews and comparing specs the Toshiba NB505 looked to be the best and now that I have it, I love it.

My only reason for a non 5 star review is that I had to buy a USB wireless card because Ubuntu would not find and install my built in Realtek 8188 wireless card. I did find out that when I bought it, it was one of the newest netbooks on the market. With iPad there's a lot of incompatibility issues and requires hassles to download a lot of software just to visit certain sites. For a third of a price of an iPad, I have a very sleek looking gadget that does a lot than I expected. I have a 2 1/2 year old Lenovo Ideapad Y530 model that is incredibly powerful, but it weighs 7 1/2 pounds and only gets 2 hours of battery life, not even close to enough to tote around campus all day; more of a desktop replacement. This Toshiba provides pretty much everything I need for both school, play, and vacations. It's hard to consider dinging it for only 1GB RAM, when that seems standard. I wish they would just raise the price of netbooks $10, throw the 2GB in there and stop messing around. Better and larger Touchpad. Buy yours before Toshiba realizes this machine has the best value/price ratio. The set up was a cinch, and anyone (even a non-computer person) could turn it on, follow the quick set up guide and be playing with it within minutes. Bought this for my dad thinking it would be ideal to Skype with the parents.
