Fix No Sound Problem On Windows XP Laptop Or Desktop Computer

One of the common issues experienced by laptop or desktop users is no sound problem.

We recommend you perform the following troubleshooting steps to resolve the sound problem:

Adjust Sound Settings: 1. Make sure that the sound settings are set properly. 2. Click on Start and select Control Panel. 3. In Control Panel, Switch to Classic View. 4. Now double click on Sounds and Audio devices option. 5. In the "Sounds and Device windows properties", adjust the Device volume by moving the slider right. 6. Ensure that the mute is turned off. 7. Select Audio tab and see that IDT or Realtek Audio is the Default device. After verifying the sound settings, check the sound now.

System Restore: If the issue you are experiencing with the sound is a recent one, you can try with System Restore to fix the issue. To perform System Restore, click on Start. 1. Click on Start, click on All Programs. 2. Click on Accessories and now select System Tools. 3. Select System Restore and perform the onscreen instructions to restore the computer to an earlier state where you had no issues in your computer.

Windows Audio Services: If the problem persists, check windows audio services once. We need to make sure that Windows Audio Services are enabled and running. 1. Click on Start and select Run. 2. Type services.msc in the Run Window and click on OK. 3. In the Services windows, select Windows Audio. 4. Right click on Windows Audio and Properties. 5. In the Windows Audio Properties window 6. In the General tab, in the Startup type select the option Automatic if it is set to Manual or disabled. This can fix the no sound issue.

Reinstall Audio Drivers: If the issue still persists, reinstall or update sound drivers. To Reinstall or Update audio drivers,perform the following steps: 1.Click on Start and select Run. 2.Type Devmgmt.msc in Run window and click on OK. This will open Device Manager. 3.In Device Manager window, click on ?+? sign next to Sound, video and game controllers 4.Right click on IDT High Definition Audio Codec or Realtek High Definition Audio and select Uninstall. 5.This will uninstall the sound drivers. 6.Windows will prompt to restart the computer, in this case restart your system. Windows will automatically detect the changes and reinstalls the sound drivers. 7.We recommend you to reinstall the latest audio drivers from your computer support website. The laptop manufacturer website will have the latest drivers available. We can install these drivers to fix the sound issues. Reinstalling or updating the sound drivers can fix this no sound issues in computer. 8.If the sound device is not shown under Sound, video and game controllers, it would be present under unknown devices. Make sure that it is enabled if it is not. Right click on the device and select Enable to enable the device and perform the reinstalling steps to resolve the no sound in windows XP problem. If Sound device is not shown under Sound, video and game controllers, you can check it by clicking on Action menu in Device Manager and Selecting Scan for Hardware Changes.

Verify Volume Controls and Check Connections: Laptops have their own volume control, make sure that they are enabled. Usually laptop have Fn + F(key number) key number changes for each laptop model. If you are experiencing the issue in desktop computer, verify that connections between the computer and speakers are properly connected. Check if the sound cables are working, you can test the issue by using other cables if available.

Sound Codecs: Download and install K lite codec pack. If you are experiencing the issue with playing a file on media player, the problem is most likely due to the audio codes which might be missing, so make sure that you have the required sound codecs.

Remove and Replace Sound Card: If the issue still persists, there are chances that the problem might be with the hardware, the last step you can do is to remove and reinsert the sound card by following the steps in the manuals for your computer model. We suggest you to visit your computer manufacturer website for steps on removing and reinstalling the sound card for your computer model.
