Product ID Coders & Inks

By Keren Kipfer

If your business will be need any type of product id code to be placed on the packaging, you need to learn about the types of printers and inks that are designed specifically for id coding. Here are a few quick facts about product id printers that might prove helpful.

There are many different types of printers, but the two you generally will find associated with product id printer are drop on demand or continuous inkjet printers. With the continuous inkjet (CIJ) coder, pressure builds in the ink containment basin or reservoir and then it is this high pressure that will force the ink from the basin out of a microscopic nozzle and onto your product. Drop on demand printers, interchangeably known as DOD coders, work in one of two ways. These printers also use pressure to force out ink but this pressure is created using either heat or a type of piezoelectric material. Piezoelectric DOD printers are commonly used for product id coders.

When you are shopping for a CIJ or DOD machine, you probably will hear many different brand names, and there are many excellent manufacturers out there to consider. Among the CIJ coder manufacturers, you hear a good deal about Maxima and VideoJet machines and both are high quality. Maxima is often an excellent choice for those on a tighter budget, as they offer high quality at a more affordable price than purchasing a new VideoJet or Domino coder.

There are many models and brands of drop on demand coders, as well. Domino is big name in the industry, and they produce both DOD and CIJ coders. Domino coders can be expensive, so you might consider a less expensive manufacturer such as Altima. Altima coders cost less but still offer high quality large character inkjet coding. Perhaps the best idea would be to decide which model you want and then try to buy it used rather than buy it new from the manufacturer.

If your used coder needs a little work, there are companies that specialize in coder repairs and refurbishment. They will inspect all of the parts of your coder, give the machine a thorough cleaning and also replace any part that is not in perfect working order. In the end, you will have a coder that is practically new for much less than if you bought it new. There are product id refurbishment companies that provide service for every type of printer, from Domino coders to Imaje coders and many other brands.

In addition to refurbishing and repairing, these product id companies also offer great deals on all of the ink and make-up fluids that you will need. Find a company that offers low cost, but high quality inks. Be sure to ask about how the inks are produced, and choose a company that uses a special filtration process to ensure that there is no sediment, sludge or residue in your ink.
