Spice Up Your Video With Green Screen Technology

By Dennis McLaine

Green screen studios have become extremely popular in video production over the recent years. They are now used on almost anything you see on TV or in the movies. While we see green screens used all over the place, many folks have no idea what they are or what they are ultimately capable of. By using a green screen, you can make videos that are more exciting than ever before. If you are new to producing videos, then reading about green screens can assist you in creating the quality of video you desire.

Green screens allow you to set your video in any location you can imagine. You can film during a hurricane, in the middle of a sunset, or even while floating in space; all from your basement! Although this seems impossible, green screen technology has made it possible. Computer technology allows video producers to insert any setting they want, in place of the green screen, during the video editing process. Your audience will only see the setting you intended, and they will have no knowledge of the green screen that was originally there. Because of the green screen, anyone can create a video that has unique visual effects.

This process has been used in the making of many well-known productions in history. Think about Star Wars and all the seemingly impossible events that take place in those movies. Did you ever wonder about how such things were possible? Thanks to advances in video production, including green screen technology, George Lucas was able to create one of the greatest stories of all time. Almost the entire trilogy was green screen generated.

Before you start using a green screen, here are a couple of things to keep in mind. You really have to be aware of what your actors are wearing when using a green screen for your production. They must stay away from green or blue clothing. The reason for this is that these clothes match the background, so in the final take, your actors will be transparent. Prominent patterns and stripes can cause a similar result. Green reflections will appear in your videos if your actors have on shiny watches or jewelry. These inconveniences can be highly annoying, but they are easily fixed.

For green screens to work well, you need to have excellent lighting. If you don't have good lighting, you will see shadows all over your video. Darkness is difficult to recognize for green screen software, and this can result in your backgrounds appearing fake. There needs to be about six feet of difference between your actors and the green screens. This distance is to ensure that there are no shadows or green spill in the final production.

Green screen technology has proved to be a great tool for video production. However, it is not easy and takes a producer who knows what he's doing. You can learn how to use one by consulting a video production professional. You could also use many applications that have step by step instructions built in. Green screens have changed video production forever, and have given producers more freedom to create better videos.
