Great Investment - Best Personal Finance Software Review

By Isaac Henderson

Also, the reports don't print" YNAB will not solve world peace, but it can bring some peace to your world. Before YNAB, I was keeping track of categorical spending on my own spreadsheet. It was OK, but YNAB hits the nail on the head.

YNAB not only performs the needed computations of a budget, but organizes them on easy to read spreads. The budgeting principles taught along with the program truly saved my wife and I during a particularly hard month because we had a month's income saved to back us up. Love the free updates as well. I bought the YNAB software after reading recommendations and it had become available for Mac.

You only budget the money you actually have, instead of (as with Quicken) guessing how much you're going to spend and then comparing those totals with what you think your income will be. I used to try to budget out a whole year in Quicken, but with YNAB, I just budget out each month as I go (being sure to include things like $100/month for that $300 payment that only comes due once a quarter). We are doing Dave Ramsey's method and using cash envelopes but we needed a really effective budgeting software tool and this is it. YNAB, where have you been all my life"

The one thing I've always struggled with is that their model was to simply record what you've spent and review it against your budget. This is all well and good for those who are inclined that way, but it never worked for me.

I now know where every penny goes and feel totally in control of choosing what to spend my money on. The money to buy this software is an investment to a peaceful financial future. There is plenty of online help for your questions, which I had many. Even the online book was very helpful to me.

This system basically works by, as one commenter said, living off your last month's income. While hard to accomplish, once you do, this makes life MUCH easier. One of my majors in college was accounting so I know and like working with numbers. But, all I really needed for my home use was a good computer based budgeting program and not a financial software program. I'm a big over spender when it comes to "home upgrades". I like the best of everything and my credit card was starting to show it. I got that total down to $150, and still got all my beer and smokes, yeah. Last week we spent $174 on groceries, this week, $68 (we checked what we had in the cupboards/fridge this time before going), saved $100. I have saved much more money using it. It is well worth the $39.95.
