The Very Best Product For The Price - Computer Antivirus Software Critique

By Zoey Williams

Norton seems to have turned a corner with their antivirus as I am pleased with NIS 2010 and the upgraded version. The footprint is smaller and does not bog down your PC as with Norton products of old.

In between I have tried others but always come back to Symantec's Norton Internet Security (just don't buy direct from them). Thanks Amazon for a good price and quick delivery. Firstly, this software runs perfectly in the background. I mean you barely notice it is there. Now, when anything goes into your Outlook junk email folder, it is automatically stripped (by Outlook-not Norton) of all its links and becomes just plain messy text-unreadable. I like to send most e-mails to a different folder where I can look at them.

I used Norton's chat feature to chat with a representative about this situation. The reply I received was, "Not all anti-virus software catches every virus."

Check PC Mag if you want to read their recommendations on security software. I do not use the spam filter (I avoid MS Outlook like the plague), nor do I use the parental controls in NIS, so I can't comment on those features. Once again Norton gets a 5 star rating from me. It installed cleanly over my older version, and runs quietly in the background. They didn't seem to upgrade or downgrade too much on this new version. It does seem you can turn off Idle Scans in though which is a huge plus. The best buys, in my view, are Norton Internet Security 3-User license, CCleaner (it's free!), Diskeeper and for backup of files onto a NAS, Memeo Backup Professional. I use Acronis True Image for image backups, but I find it unreliable (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't). This is a great product work fine. I had Norton Internet Security for several years and have always been happy with it. Note that Norton Antivirus is much cheaper than Norton Internet Security, but lacks several on-line protection tools that many consider necessary these days. The Norton Internet Security is in my opinion the best on the market today and for the price that Amazon has it for is awesome. I ordered it and in two days I received it and installed it on my computer. Received it ASAP from Amazon and had a clean install. It works pretty quickly in comparison to previous versions of Norton and certainly more effective than my most recent package, ZoneAlarm.

But the free stuff is still a great stop-gap measure. I know you can get free internet security but I have trust issues with them.

Unfortunately, their removal tool removes all history, settings, and worst of all, all quarantined files. In the brief period that the product worked before saying that it had expired, it moved four files into quarantine.
